ICE LOAD MONITORING Warning of floating ice in cold waters can be included in the HSM system by adding strain sensors in the bow waterline. As the Arctic shipping routes are opening, the challenges of operations in cold waters affect more and more ships. One of the challenges when operating in Arctic areas has been lack of information to the bridge about the actual ice load on the hull. Historically this has been based on navigators judgement and experience but now it will be possible to get live data via the SENSFIB solution. By monitoring the stress responses in the bow structure during operations in ice we can provide the navigators with online information about the load margins in the bow, and provide support for the decision-making. Owners and operators can document safety-conscious operations to authorities and the public. The solution derived from a DNV project in 2007. Read more about the concept here
